Tuesday Evening Ramblings

Okay, I recognize and acknowledge the importance of Twitter in today’s new media.  I recognize and acknowledge the importance of sites like Tumblr and Triberr for multiplying outreach.  I accept those realities.  But for the life of me, I can’t figure any of them out.  Literally, they make no sense.  Twitter  is too fast, too chaotic, and too random.  Triberr is just a glitch-filled labyrinth of dead-end links, and Tumblr is like another language with reverse syntax.  Trying to learn these tools makes me feel old and out of touch.

I just want to write my books and blog entries without all this hassle of marketing in the new media, but that’s not realistic if I ever want to be successful.  Somehow, I have to master these outlets, or if not master, at least become proficient with them in order to reach a broad spectrum.  Otherwise, I’ll never grow much beyond my current readership.  It’s a lot of extra time and energy that I’m not sure I have, but over the next month or so, I’m going to try to learn them.  If you hear a lot of cursing and swearing from my direction, you know why.

Please, let me also mention that the Ramblings crossed 20,000 views all time today.  I know that’s not a huge number and there are blogs that get that in a day, but it was a big milestone for me, one that I’m proud of achieving.  Thank you to everyone who reads my silly posts and provides comments.  I appreciate each and every one of you.  Hope everyone has a great night.

  1. Well I had to ditch The “book of faces” and Twitter sits lonely in cyberspace (ok, sometimes I update)WP is enough for me..I do have to work.. But I hear ya, social media is where it’s at…
Good luck on the Twitter gig!!!

  2. I don’t know how to use twitter either. I can post stuff to it, but I don’t get all the hash tag stuff. I read a study that said people only check back one hour in twitter feeds to see what they missed but they will check back a whole day of FB statuses. Which means most people would miss your single tweet.

  3. Yeah, I don’t get Twitter either. I made an effort this week — for almost two full days — to try to get it better. Even installed Tweetdeck to try to help me really work it. Umm… Yeah… Not happening.

Tonight, I went in there and stopped following a ton of people. It was just too overwhelming.

I’ll keep a Twitter account up, with links to my blog, and if I get famous and people want to follow me, then great.

But I personally believe it’s impossible to build relationships on Twitter that matter with very many people. Certainly not more than 50 or 100. And for sure, having 20,000 followers on there really means nothing, IMO.

  4. Twitter is like the one liners at the bottom of each page of the Uncle John’s Bathroom Readers. Entertaining, but lacking in depth. : )

  5. Congratulations on the 20,000 mark! That is totally awesome :). Your posts are rarely ever silly :). As for Twitter, I am an avid Tweeter to my eternal disgust but I kinda love it. Holla if I can help you with anything.

    C.
